How To Avoid Scammers On Online Dating Sites

Online dating is popular because of its convenience for people who want to be dating over 40. Imagine back in the old days when there was no internet for you to meet someone and you have to go out no matter how unconfident you are to find your date. Nowadays, you can simply google the word – best dating sites and you will be presented with numerous pages promising your dream partner but those are also paired with a dangerous word – online scammer.

It is easy to get into a dating site. You can just pick your best picture from your gallery, tell the world of online dating about you, what you are looking for in a partner, and voila! You’re up there to pick and get picked by other romance hopefuls. That is great but you should prepare for heartbreaks. Not only in terms of the heart, but also with regards to your security and money. With every lonely heart in there, there is a prey waiting: the scammers. They will make you fall in love and run away with your money. How are you going to avoid them?

Scammers are now intelligent. They are constantly innovating ways to be one step ahead of every tip out there on the internet.

So, how do you avoid scammers on online dating sites?

  • Random, inconsistent messages

    • Scammers need to have a lot of targets. They send random messages to people and see who will respond. You will see messages like, “I really like your pictures,” even though you have not uploaded a picture yet. Often times, their answers are inconsistent because of the number of people that they are talking to. Stay away from these profiles.

  • Fake Picture

    • Google pictures of the people you are talking to online. In some cases, there are really genuine people that are using fake photos for their security. The way to beat this strategy is to ask for their most recent picture. If you are comfortable with each other, a video call is the best strategy to check their legitimacy.
  • Give me money

    • A dating site is for dating and not for begging. Once a person asks for money, you should stop. You will hear sweet things before they transition to asking for money so beware. You will also hear some excuses like, “I don’t have money left for the internet so I cannot talk to you soon. Will you be able to lend me some money?” Or a perfect excuse like, “I am on my way to meet you but my car crashed. Will you be able to lend me a few bucks and I will pay you once I get there.”

  • They ask for your personal information

    • Just because you did not send money, you think you are safe. You are wrong. There are other ways for them to earn from you. That is identity theft. They can use your information to open loans, bank accounts, and purchase things online. You should never reveal personal sensitive information to someone online.

    • You are finally ready for an offline date but whenever you ask your online date, excuses after excuses come up on your screen. She is not feeling well, she needs to go to work, she is tired, no bus fare, and endless petty excuses to avoid you. You might think that she is just not ready yet but this is also an indication of a scammer who cannot afford to be identified.

Be educated when it comes to the dating world before you enter. There are reports of scammers getting caught for extorting money but you seriously don’t need to make that effort and be labeled as a fool who fell in love with a scammer. If your fate is not good in the online world and gets scammed, don’t be silent. Report to the authorities to stop these scammers who are lurking online.
